Diocesan Staff Update
Canon Steve Carlsen, Canon for Congregational Vitality, will be appointed to assist Trinity Episcopal Church, Tulsa, as Interim Priest beginning April 1st. While it is unusual for a diocesan canon to serve in an interim capacity in a congregation, Bishop Poulson made this offer to the Vestry, and it was accepted.
Bishop Poulson shared his thoughts on the appointment, “Trinity, Tulsa, is an important congregation in our Diocese. With the shortage of clergy searching for new positions, qualified interims have become difficult to find, especially those with the skills and experience to guide Trinity during this transition. Canon Steve brings with him an emphasis on developing congregational vitality, has experience in large, complex congregations, and can help Trinity address any needs and be ready to call a new rector in an efficient and timely way.”
Before coming to Oklahoma to be a Canon, he served two Cathedrals: St. John’s Cathedral, Denver as Sub-Dean; and Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis, as Dean for twelve years.
Canon Steve’s title at Trinity will be “Interim Priest.” He is relieving Fr. Bob Scott, who briefly served as an interim, or rather “interim interim,” in his words. Fr. Bob will continue serving at Trinty in his role as administrator. As Interim Priest, Canon Steve will advise the leadership at Trinity as they move through the transition, but the Sr. Warden and Vestry will retain their roles as ecclesiastical authority. Canon Steve will remain an employee of the Diocese.
Canon Steve will be at Trinity three weeks each month, from Thursday through Sunday, beginning April 3rd. In his remaining time, he will continue to work with the Ministry Partners Team on the Diocesan Staff to promote vitality in our congregations. “Over the years, I have led retreats with the Trinity Vestry and staff. My team and I have consulted with leaders, both lay and ordained. So, while I look forward to learning more, I admire and value the work of Trinity and look forward to helping Trinity do what is needed to complete an efficient, strong transition and call a new rector. I view this new appointment as an adventure. My wife, Jen, and I have enjoyed our time in Tulsa over the years, and we look forward to diving in at Trinity.”
Last year, Canon Steve spent time at Santa Maria Virgen in Oklahoma City in an informal capacity, assisting the congregation with its transitional needs while also continuing his work in congregational vitality. “I love what I do in the Diocese, but I love working in congregations, whether I am visiting only on a Sunday or for longer assignments. Any way I can be of service.” Canon Steve shared.
